Finding the Best Home Improvement Loans

When the time comes to do work around the house, finding good deals on home improvement loans can be vitally important. Home improvement loans can be used to help you improve any part of your house or other real estate, providing you with the money to get the materials that you need and to hire the professionals that can get the job done.

Interest rates tend to be lower, since the improvements can actually raise the value of the real estate, and they can even include some of the external costs associated with building such as building permits and property taxes. Best of all, you don't need to supply any additional collateral... the improvements and the real estate serve as their own guarantee.

Equity is a key factor
When applying for home improvement loans, the equity of your house or real estate comes into play in a major way. Equity, if you aren't sure, is the amount of money that you have invested in the home or property... in other words, it's the portion of the house that you actually "own", and that isn't tied up in a mortgage or other loan.

If you have a mortgage for £100,000 on a home and have already paid £50,000 of it, then you have 50% equity in that home... or £50,000. This means that if you apply for a loan on that house, the equity that you have will be a major factor in determining how much you can borrow. The equity in the house serves as the collateral for the loan, and allows you to receive loans that you otherwise might not be eligible for.

Researching the project
Before applying for a home improvement loan, you need to gather some information. You're going to need to get the cost of supplies from at least 2 or 3 different outlets (such as building supply stores), as well as estimates from 2 or 3 contractors on how much the entire job will cost.

From there you need to start getting quotes from banks or finance companies, showing them the work that you plan on doing as well as the estimates for materials and labour. After receiving several loan quotes, look them over and see which one has the lowest interest rate with the best terms... this is the place you want to get your loan from. Once you've obtained your home improvement loan and started on your improvements, you need to start working on repaying what you've borrowed.
Not only does fast repayment prevent damage to your credit report, but it can also help to establish a good working relationship with a lender which can lead to lower rates and better terms down the road.

Don't Forget to Maintain Your Alarm System

As with just about anything you own, your home security system must be properly maintained if it is to remain effective for you over the long term. Most home security systems will let you know when it is time to perform your maintenance, which should occur about once a month just to be on the safe side. You want to be secure in knowing that your system will work when you need it most. Unfortunately, you never know when that might be, so it's best to be prepared for anything at any time.

The first step you should take toward monthly maintenance of your home security system is to contact your monitoring company to ensure that your system is still connected to their server. They will verify whether or not they are receiving a solid signal from your system. If it's weak, they can either suggest ways you can make it stronger or they will send out a repairman to fix it for you.

Then, you will want to check each sensor that is connected to your system. The sensors are typically mounted with either Velcro or tape, both of which can deteriorate over time. You don't want your sensors to become dislodged or even fall off because then they will not respond to an intruder the way they should. Each sensor should be in place and not be loose in any way. This will make sure that the sensors will detect intruders in the proper manner.

Finally, you will want to test the alarm by opening a door or window to make sure the siren goes off immediately. However, before you do this, contact your home security monitoring company and have them place your system into test mode. This way, they will not send emergency personnel to your home by mistake. Any sensor you have a question about can be tested during this time. Just be sure to remember to call your company back after the test is done. You definitely want to have your system put back on line as quickly as possible.

In the event that you change your Internet, telephone or cable provider, you need to talk with your security system company to ensure that your alarm system is going to still work with your new provider. Usually, there won't be a problem with compatibility, but if there is, your company or provider can usually install an adaptor to solve the problem.

Home Burglary - 9 Tips to Preventing a Home Break-In

My neighbors recently returned home one evening to find that their home had been burglarized. This had never happened in our neighborhood before. Although it was still daylight no one had seen anyone around their home during the previous two hours while they had been out shopping. The thieves made off with a handgun, a laptop computer, jewelry, and even a television set. They had used a crowbar to get into the house. It turns out that this is happening more frequently than ever before across the United States. The police arrived soon after and told all of us in the neighborhood that we needed to make some changes. Here are the tips that they gave us:

1. Get to know your neighbors. Exchange names, phone numbers, and other information that makes your neighborhood become closer as friends and neighbors. Consider starting a Neighborhood Watch group on your street.

2. Leave a light on or use a timer for your lights if you will be away for a full day or longer.

3. Have the post office hold your mail and put your newspapers on vacation hold while you are away. As an alternative, ask one of your neighbors to bring in your mail and newspapers and keep them for you until you return.

4. Consider installing a security system. These systems are more common now and fairly inexpensive to put in. The companies usually require you to sign a two year agreement.

5. Walk on your street regularly. Get to know which cars belong with a particular house. Meet neighbors that you have never talked to before.

6. Write down the license plate numbers and descriptions of strange vehicles and their occupants. Make a note of the day and time the vehicle was parked on your street.

7. Do not discuss private details with anyone who comes to your door trying to sell something or wanting information. Tell them to leave their card or other contact information on your front steps or porch and do not open the door until long after they have gone.

8. Do not leave mail in your mail box to be picked up later. Take it to the post office or hand it personally to the carrier.

9. Watch out for your neighbors. If you see someone or something that doesn't seem right take a closer look.

If all of us take the time to get to know each other better and help each other we can help the police to protect our neighborhoods. We can all feel more safe and secure if we follow these tips and become good neighbors.

Painting Your Home's Exterior: An Easy Do-It-Yourself Home ImprovementProject for the New Homeowner

Painting is a common choice for a homeowner's DIY project. It requires relatively few special tools and the skills are easy to learn. If you are new to the do-it-yourself world, painting your house is a great first step. Follow this guide to pick up some tips, tricks, and techniques to get your first project off on the right foot.

Selecting Exterior Paint
Choosing paint for exterior walls is easier in some ways than interior choices. Exterior paint is much more limited, so there are fewer options to overwhelm you (you can't get it in eggshell finish, for example). The color options are also more limited, and many people find it easy to choose an exterior paint color - most people stick with the existing color, in fact.

You should always make sure to choose quality over cost when choosing paint. A high-quality paint will cost more than the lower-quality brands, but it will also last much longer, and look much better. Quality paints are also formulated to be easier to apply, making your job that much easier. A cheap paint will chip, flake, crack, peel, and fade, requiring you to repeat the painting job more often, and costing you more money in the long run.

Estimating how much paint to buy can be slightly difficult. Different surfaces will need different amounts of paint, so simple math with the square footage won't always get you the right answer. Smooth surfaces will generally conform to that estimate, but surfaces such as stucco or overlapped siding will require 10 to 50 percent more paint. Ask at your paint store for help with the estimation, or try one of the many "paint calculators" available on the internet.

While you're purchasing your paint, don't forget the exterior primer! Primer, as its name suggests, prepares the surface for the new paint, ensuring good adhesion. Don't be tempted to skip this step to save time or money, because without primer, even the best paint can begin to peel quickly.

Select Your Tools
Power sprayers are often the first choice for professional painters, and may be a good option for you as well. These can often be rented for use over a week or a weekend. A power sprayer will apply the equivalent of two coats of paint at one time, and is great for covering large areas quickly.

Whether you choose a paint sprayer or not, you'll still need brushes. The sprayer cannot get into tight spaces and corners, and is not suitable for painting trim. Even the highest quality brushes are relatively inexpensive, so choose a good one. Well-made handles and bristles will lead to a smoother coat of paint and easier application.

Don't forget the other equipment! You'll need a sturdy ladder, of course. Depending on your specific case, you may need buckets, trays, mixing sticks, dropcloths, paint remover, or specialty tools such as an edger or sander.

Techniques and Tips
Choose the right time for painting. Autumn is a great season to paint. Paint has to have time to cure, and rain is its worst enemy. Intense humidity can get underneath the paint and cause irreparable bubbling. In a very humid area such as Houston, the driest time of year tends to be fall or winter, so check the weather reports and bring out your paint when the weather gets cooler.

Before you begin to prime and paint, you need to prepare the surface. Rent or borrow a power washer (or get a big sponge), and thoroughly clean your walls. Once clean, use an electric sander to smooth the surface, if your wall is made of wood. While you are cleaning and sanding, check the siding for signs of rot, mold, mildew, or other damage.

If you have multiple cans of same-color paint, combine them in a big bucket to ensure a uniform color. Even a very slight color difference can become obvious when it's applied to large areas.
Always start at the top! This will prevent streaks and drips down an already-painted surface. While painting, use broad, even strokes to get smooth coverage. Apply two coats of paint over one coat of primer to ensure solid coverage.

If you've never painted before, take some time to visit the paint department of your home improvement store, or a specific paint store like Sherwin Williams. The staff there should be more than capable of helping you figure out how much paint you need and which equipment you need, as well as answering all your questions.
Or contact your local construction company for assistance.

Factors to Consider When Getting a Home Security System

Have you ever picked up your local newspaper and simply wondered why there is so much crime in your area? The fact is crime is increasing. Whether you live in a city or a rural area, it does not matter. Protect yourself, your family and your home with a home security system. There are many different types of systems that provide you with the added measure of security that will allow you to feel safe and will prevent you from becoming another victim of crime. A good security system can provide much more than just home protection. If you choose the right system, you can save money each month on insurance premiums. Just what does the right system look like?

Fire Alarm System

One of the main security systems you should have installed in your home is a fire system. A fire system can include several different types of alarms. One of the most common is the smoke detector. The smoke detector will go off with the detection of smoke in your home. Also helpful in protecting your home is a heat detector. The heat detector will go off if the temperature reaches as certain level, such as 135 degrees.

The deterrent value of security cameras

Very few people add on outside security cameras with their basic system. The costs of video monitoring are extensive, and the system requires much more space. Likewise, many people find security cameras to be overly intrusive and unsightly. There is a certain deterrent value to video cameras, though, and statistics suggest that homes are much less likely to be robbed when owners choose a visible camera setup.

Door and window indicators are important

Certain features set security systems apart. While you might spend a little more money on door and window protection, this will help lower your insurance costs. The majority of home invasions occur when a person breaks through a window. A good security system will be immediately triggered when a window is broken, and this will lower the risk of personal property loss.

Monitoring service matters

When you buy a security system, you get to choose to whether or not to have automatic monitoring. Without it, a security system is little more than a sound alarm. While this might be able to scare away some would-be criminals, it does not provide the comprehensive protection that monitoring provides. With a monitored system, the police will be at your home within a few minutes. This gives them a much better chance of apprehending the assailants in the act, and you will get your property back if this happens.

If you're looking for dependable home security systems, please check out the link which the author is recommending. You will sure to find the necessary info to help you make a wise decision.

Why it is Better to Do Home Improvement Projects in the Slowing Economy

The great influx of people from all over the country and the rest of the world wanting to take a shot at becoming a part of the Big Apple - New York City, have long since caused a problem in the housing market. Today, this issue is faced by NYC homeowners together with the general condition of the economy of the United States; with the growing unemployment and retrenchments, instability in the Wall Street, and the decline in consumer buying. But even so, this time may be just the perfect opportunity to take advantage of and make a reality out f your dream home through home improvement projects.

In the slowing economy, it pays to be able to maximize whatever amount that you allot into your home improvement project. The assurance of success in home improvement does not lie in spending more. Even with less, you can avail of the best value for your money's worth by spending it wisely.

The key to the success of any home improvement project to boost return on investment is product selection and quality. To achieve the highest quality, it is crucial that whoever works on the project has the right skills and experience. So if you are not a contractor yourself better let a qualified professional take over and not only bring about success of the project but also make the whole experience a great one for you.

As the old adage goes, we should be able to see the light in every situation. In the case of a slowing economy, why is it better to do your home improvement projects now?

1. Now is high time to be getting the best offers and services from a certified New York contractor.

The slow economy has been affecting every business and trade and this includes the contracting industry. To keep their services more attractive, contractors are now offering home improvement services at a much lower price with several promotional benefits.

Thinking that DIY would save them more; many homeowners tend to avoid hiring contractors. But eventually they are faced with more problems and cost. This flawed idea keeps many contractors idle for a time and more than available to answer to your needs. By hiring a qualified contractor now, you would be doing both your home improvement project and yourself a favor. Without a long list of client to attend to, the contractor would be able to focus more on the job at hand going through every stage in the most efficient and timely manner with more attention to details.

2. Buying high quality materials for an affordable price is possible.

As was mentioned, many businesses, if not all, are greatly affected by the slowing economy. Among the most popular strategies to keep the customers coming and buying is through staging sale after sale. This could be the smartest time for homeowners to buy materials and supplies needed for the completion of their home improvement projects.

The slowing economy opens the door to the easier achievement of the key factors to a successful and valuable home improvement project and these are quality and product selection. And by taking advantage of the situation, you would be able to enhance the quality of living of your family as well as add value to your home. Successful home improvement projects would let you live in beauty and comfort even at tough times.

The Main Advantages Of Installing Brand New Patio Flooring

There a wide range of things to consider when making an outside living space. Your patio is a great spot to hang out throughout the summer months to enjoy the sun and get a bit of fresh air. One of the bigger choices you will need to think about is what kind of flooring you'll want for your outdoor patio area. The flooring may have a major impact on how your space looks and how individuals will feel in it. There are a number of deck flooring choices for someone to consider when you start shopping.

Lots of people like the look of hardwood floors and would also love to include that classic, expensive look into their outdoor space as well. You'll be able to choose either laminate or natural wood floor tiles that could be installed by yourself in a day or two, without the assistance of an expert. Deck tiles feature an interlocking design that doesn't demand the use of screws and nails to get them in place. You will find that the patio tile flooring is available in a variety of natural wood colors and also for the more daring individual, there are more fun, bold colors available. If you're looking for real wood as opposed to a composite or vinyl, you need to look for a hardwood like cedar or redwood that has a high oil content and can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Among the most popular patio flooring materials that people decide to use is composite decking. This type of flooring is made out of recycled plastic mixed with wood particles, and can be made to look almost identical to real hardwood. The major difference between the two is a substantial price difference. You'll find composite decking that'll fit into even the most modest of budgets. Vinyl is another floor product that some people decide to use because it's resilient and requires little upkeep and maintenance. Both composite and vinyl floors come in an array of options that'll look fabulous in your outdoor patio space.

When you shop on a tight budget for your flooring for the outdoor space, make sure you get a decking system you can install easily by yourself. This means you'll save money since you will not need to get a contractor to do the work for you. You can even decide on a rubber option that will be very durable and extremely safe, which may be a fantastic choice for people with children. Now a days, a lot of individuals are choosing ceramic or stone tiles, because of the luxurious and expensive look that it offers to your yard. Though they are simple to install for someone with experience, you might want to consult a contractor when installing tile outdoors if you don't have the knowledge.

Some types of patio flooring, like rubber, do a good job at insulating the floor from cold. If you are the kind of person that chooses to walk around outside with no shoes on, installing a rubber decking may be perfect for you. New flooring in the outdoor space will offer a new appearance to your backyard and you will be proud to entertain guests there. Your personal situation will be the ultimate element in deciding which floor is right for you. If you would like an expensive look, hardwood and natural stone may be for you. But for people with children that will require something a tad bit more durable, composite or vinyl flooring might be a more sensible choice.

Do's for Home Security and Surveillance

Home security is important to you because you want to keep your family and your home free from harm. One of the most important elements of home security is preventing burglars from gaining access to your property. Having a security and surveillance camera and alarm accessories is a good idea but it is only the start. You also must know the dos as they relate to protecting your castle.

Do secure all of your windows and doors when you leave for work, an evening out or on vacation. No matter where you are going, even if it a trip to the grocery store that is only five minutes away, check to make sure that all of the doors and windows in your home are secure before you leave the premises. Home security and surveillance equipment can do a lot but you need to be smart about things as well!

Burglars love sliding glass doors because they are so easy to open. Yours does not have to be though! Do purchase a bar or lock from a security and surveillance store and secure the doors so thieves are not able to enter your home. If you are short on cash, place a broom handle or a wooden dowel in the door track to keep it closed.

Do not leave any garden tools or lawn equipment outside as it could prove to be tempting to a would-be thief. Put away your ladder, lawnmower, rakes and any other outdoor items. Make sure that they are locked up. Having a ladder in plain view would be a resource that a criminal could use to break into your residence. Do not give a crook a reason to target your house!

As a security and surveillance measure, do walk around the perimeter of your house and try to think like a burglar. Are there any entry points that are not secured? Doors and windows need to be secured but so do exhaust systems and roof openings. Are there any areas of weakness that you observe?

Scrutinize your property and look around with the most discerning of eyes. Get your spouse or another family member to take a walk about after you do. This may sound a little paranoid but when it comes to preventing a break-in, you can never be too careful!

When you are on your way out, leave your curtains open to a position that is normal. In other words, make it look as you are at home. You do not want to do anything to call unnecessary attention to your windows. This could potentially cause suspicion.

When you arrive home, always have your house key in hand and ready to insert in the lock. You do not want to stand at your front door fumbling around in your pocket or purse for your keys. A prowler in the neighborhood could take you unaware. This is security and surveillance at its most basic!

A Home Security System Protects Your Belongings During the Holidays

Every year on New Year's Eve people think about making a resolution for the coming year. Here's an idea for a resolution that should not wait for a new year to arrive. During the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day the percentage of home break-ins increases dramatically across the United States. As is typical in most large cities, Houston home security system installation is also on the rise.

Intruders often see the Holidays as the perfect time to break in, especially if they see a huge tree with lots of gifts surrounding it in the front window of a home that appears to be unattended. Burglars steal keepsakes, televisions, electronics, gifts, cash, credit cards, and any other valuable items they can get their hands on. This can totally ruin the Holiday season for the victims. This tragedy can be prevented by installing and using a home security system.

Home security systems are practical and economical when it comes to protecting your valuables. Selecting an alarm monitoring company that is right for your needs is important. There is a multitude of alarm monitoring companies in the US, so be sure to do your research before signing on. Having a locally owned and operated company protecting your home can give you peace of mind because they will be there promptly in the event of an emergency.

By installing and using a home security system, you'll have peace of mind that your loved ones are protected. Not only can you protect your home and loved ones against intruders, but most monitoring systems also include fire in their service, as well. All too often families are lost to fire and smoke inhalation in house fires, but with the proper monitoring system, this can be prevented.

There are a few actions you can take to make your home and Holiday season a lot more secure against possible burglaries. For one thing, don't advertise your tree and gifts by placing them in a window in the front of your home. Choose a more discreet location in your home. If you plan to travel during the holiday season, make sure your trusted neighbors know you are going to be away. Make sure all your doors and windows are locked. Post your address only on your mailbox as posting you name could prove to be unwanted advertising for intruders. Don't leave messages on your telephone answering devices that advertise your absence. Don't leave items for garbage pickup that advertise expensive gifts. And, if you don't have one already, invest in a security system for your home.

By choosing a local alarm monitoring company you can notify them when you are going to be away. In the event of a break-in, by notifying the monitoring company in advance of your absence, they can alert authorities immediately to get help on the way. Choosing the best home security system for your home is important. Choosing the best alarm monitoring company is equally important. But, you have to actually commit yourself to activating the system regularly for the system to serve its purpose.

Top Tips to Keep Your Home Secure This Winter and Festive Season

The nights are drawing in and winter will soon be upon us. Before long we will all be getting ready for the festive season. This is a tempting time for burglars who will be on the lookout for easy pickings. Residences will be filling up with more high value items either for Christmas presents or to add more enjoyment to the holidays. Opportunistic thieves might be looking for ways to relieve you of your hard earned holiday extras.

It is time to check the security of your home and consider extra measures. Follow our tips for a safe and secure yuletide:

Secure your Doors

If you're entertaining over Christmas, remember doors at the front should be closed and locked if you are all gathered at the back of the house. Check your door locks are adequate. You need good quality, suitable, heavy duty locks that have been installed by a qualified professional locksmith. Anti-slip latches will stop anyone using a card to open a door.

Similarly if you're all at the front, take measures to secure the back. If you have patio doors that slide, check the rollers are in good condition, and install anti-lifting devices so they cannot be lifted out of place.

Never hide spare keys on your premises. Leave them with a family member or trusted neighbour instead. If a key is lost, get the locks changed right away.

Watch your Windows

Keep windows closed and locked as well. If you want to let in some fresh air whilst there's a party in full swing, or the kitchen is filling with steam as that turkey roast gets underway, fit window restrictors or sash stops that will prevent them being opened further from outside, making sure you can remove them on the inside if you need them as a fire exit in an emergency.

If you like to have external Christmas lights, don't feed a cable through a window so that it can't be closed. If you don't have motion sensor floodlights, Christmas lights outside your home can make it more difficult for burglars to approach it unseen. But make sure you have an exterior electrical outlet installed so you don't give them easy access through an open window.

Take Common Sense Measures

Following those Christmas shopping expeditions, don't leave your high value purchases where they can easily be spotted from outside, and don't advertise them by putting out the packaging in full view when it's time for recycling collections.

Don't post photographs of expensive gifts on social media websites, or use them to advertise the fact that you are going away for the holidays. You never know what unscrupulous eyes will be trawling the site to find out the houses that are likely to be unoccupied.

Home security is always important, but you need to take extra care as the festive season approaches. Home Lighting - Making Your Home Improvement Project Come to Life

The proper lighting is a big part of any good home improvement project. Lighting plays a role in many aspects of the home. Many of us realize the importance of proper lighting, but few really know what types of light work best for any particular situation. We need light for almost everything we do in the home at night as well as for our own security.

Finding the right light fixtures can make all the difference when it come to the functionality and looks of the home. With the right design your lights can make the room appear bigger and brighter. Lamps can add an intimate and romantic atmosphere to the space.

Shop online and you'll find a variety of different types of home lighting designs for whatever your need is. Some manufacturers make home lighting collections that will set a whole theme throughout the home.

Each room will require different types of light fixtures. A dining room could use a chandelier above the table where as the living room is often lit by lamps. In a bigger room you could incorporate some ceiling lights. A bathroom often uses wall sconces and strip lighting.

Choosing what your home needs and getting it to come together is what makes a perfect home improvement. Keep in mind you don't want something that is too bright and hard on the eyes or to dim making it hard to see. Some rooms can even make use of track lighting.

Task lighting is also great in the kitchen or in the office. The bedroom can look great with a set of small table lamps on the end tables. Creating a lighting situation that has an even amount of light is best if you want to avoid shadows and dark corners.

Spot and accent lighting is great to add a focal point to a certain area. Placing lights inside display cabinets is a great way to show off its contents. If you want to control the brightness of the light in the room have your electrician install a dimmer switch. Keep in mind certain areas require more light like the bathroom and the kitchen.

Paying attention to the room's purpose will help you decide which type of home lighting would work the best. Placing rope lighting under your kitchen cabinets is a great way to get that extra light you need on your counter tops.

Always stop to think about what you will be doing in the room before you go out and purchase any home lighting. It will help you to make the right decisions and save you the hassle of buying the wrong type of lights.

Home Renovations Tips to Plan it Right

You might have thought for a long time and realised that it's time to make some home renovations. You already have a general idea of what you want to do with your house, including the floor plans for each room. Everything has to be planned in detail because the time and effort put into home improvements is major. Home renovation costs can get out of control if you do not analyse the details and make a general materials list without having a strict strategy. Here are some tips that you can follow once you decide to carry on some building and home renovations:

First of all, you have to decide if you can do the house renovation on your own or if you engage the services of a professional builder, i.e. a home improvement professional. These professionals provide interior design with the original floor plan of your home. They could also collaborate with you by merging your good ideas with a detailed design plan, to make your house comfortable as well as functional to live in. Truth to tell, some people think that a professional interior design is not that important in making home improvements but these design ideas can really help the owner do the right home renovations-from kitchen renovations to bathroom renovations etc.

Secondly, it is important that the block of land that your house is sitting on is well suited to the house design that you have in mind. For example, if you can sit your house to take advantage of the rise and setting of the sun you will be amazed at the variation it will make. If you are in a warm climate you want the sun coming into your bedrooms and kitchen early morning and then you want to keep out the bright sun in the afternoon.

Third and lastly, when thinking of renovation ideas, keep in mind that the furniture and furnishings of your home play an important role in your daily life. Not only do they add beauty to your new home your furniture and furnishings directly impact on your health in more ways then you realise. For example, accumulated dust in windows and drapes can produce an asthma attack for some members of your household so the interior design should have health considerations. All in all, it is advisable that you have a step-by-step guide in making home renovations and talk to a professional.

Home renovations can be fun and gratifying, particularly when done right. Do some reading on home improvements and collect some renovation ideas. You will get some great tips to design your house so it can be very practical for your family and comfortable. As a final thought, when you decide to do your home addition or extensions, home renovations costs must be planned carefully since you want to finish your home renovations within budget.

Your Home Security Checklist For The Holidays

A lot of homeowners travel over the summer but there are just as many getting ready to travel in the next few weeks to visit family and friends during the holiday season. Home security is important to every homeowner and so before you leave to visit your aunts and uncles, grandparents or other extended family, you will want to make sure that your home is secure and that you don't have to worry about your valuable possessions while away. Whether you are traveling for several days or just going down the street to the grocery store, you will want to ensure that your home is secure against any intruders.

Below is a checklist to help you prepare your home for whether you're going to be gone for a few hours just down the road or be gone for an extended holiday vacation. Tips to prepare and secure your home include:

  • Making sure that all windows and doors are locked. For extra security, doors should be made out of hardwood or be metal-clad.
  • Garage doors should always be closed and locked, along with any doors leading from the garage into your home.
  • Automatic floodlights should be used to help illuminate outdoor areas around windows and doors. Outdoor lights should be installed over all exterior doors and be turned on whether you are home or away. A lit up home will help to deter many intruders.
  • Trim back trees and bushes from the exterior of your home so that no one can hide behind them.
  • Use light timers to turn indoor lights off and on while you are away from your home for an extended period of time.
  • Lock sheds and other outdoor storage areas. Make sure to put away lawn mowers, bikes, grills and other expensive outdoor items.
  • For an extended vacation, have newspapers and mail delivers suspended or have a neighbor pick them up for you.
  • Don't leave a key underneath your door mat or a rock. Most intruders know all the hiding spots so instead, leave an extra key with a trusted neighbor.

Another way to have complete peace of mind while you are away from your home is to get help from a home security company. Benefits from having an advanced home security system often include intruder alerts and protection, and environmental monitoring (fires, leaks, carbon monoxide). Also, the mere presence of security system advertisements may act as a deterrent against intruders. Another added benefit to a home security system is that you may see a reduction in the cost of your homeowners insurance.

So whether using a professional home security company or just making some changes yourself to increase your home's security, you will have peace of mind that while traveling this holiday season your home and belongings are safe and will be waiting for you when you return.

Best Interior Design Tips For Your New Home

New homeowners have what is seemingly a daunting task to decorate their home from scratch. Truth be told, anything you start from scratch requires time and energy, but this is where you will find one hidden misconception. Investing your time and energy in order to turn a house into a place you can call home is not an overwhelming task. Just think about the final result, and you will easily find inspiration to decorate your home with style and according to your own preferences. In addition to this, we have selected some of the best interior design tips to help you decorate your home with ease, and make the right decisions when necessary.

The Measurements

The process of measuring your room and furniture you plan on placing in it are your first steps. This is the golden rule of interior design, and if you decide to skip this step, a number of problems may arise. For one, you risk the chance of buying furniture that does not fit into your room, or just looks awkward. You want to be able to walk around your new home without running into any obstacles, so be sure to take measuring tape prior to anything else, and start planning.

After you have measured the dimensions of furniture that will fit perfectly into your new home, you can actually start shopping. Another piece of advice that should not be ignored is related to the space between your furniture and the ceiling. Make sure that there is always at least 20 to 30 centimeters between these two. If your furniture is too close to the ceiling, the whole room will appear smaller visually.

Selecting Floor Coverings

After you have gotten an idea of which furniture you will place in your room, it is time to select floor coverings for your home. One of the best solutions in this regard is an area rug. Not only it will add style to your home, but also serve as a great focal point in your room. In case you have a spacious room to decorate, placing several area rugs will help you divide space into several areas, and make the entire room look well-decorated.

Mirrors and Lighting

Mirrors are essential when it comes to interior design projects. Aside from their practical purpose, mirrors can bring light to your home, serve as a focal point with the right frame, and make your room look bigger. Lighting is another important part of decorating your home, as without proper lighting even the most stylish pieces of furniture and accessories won’t be given a chance to shine. Therefore, make sure that there are enough light sources in your home in order to complete its look, as well as put an emphasis on different parts of your room you want to stand out from the rest of the space. You can use lamps with the most diverse lampshade patterns and colors, chandeliers, as well as any other source of light that will help you bring enough light into your home.

Finding The Right Style Flooring For Your Home

One of the most important parts of designing or redecorating a home is fitting the right flooring. The right decision can ensure your house transforms into a beautiful and cosy place in which to live. However, it can often be difficult to decide on the flooring that is right for your home.

Wood is currently the most popular home flooring material for various reasons. It enhances the decor of any room, is ecologically friendly and provides warmth and a timeless beauty that increases in value as the years move on. If you decide to fit wood flooring, consider each of the three types of wood flooring available to you.

Types of wood flooring:

1. Solid wood flooring.

These are wood planks or blocks (parquet) that are cut from logs and dried in a kiln to a moisture level of between 8% and 12%. They are then machine cut into various lengths, widths and grades and are later processed at the factory with wax or lacquer. Solid wood flooring is usually left unfinished for the installer to finish when fitting on site.

2. Engineered flooring.

This type of wood flooring is a hardwood veneer placed atop a cross plywood base. Engineered flooring comes in various thicknesses ranging from 10mm to 21mm. They have several benefits over solid wood, including ease of installation.

3. Laminate flooring.

This flooring is a photograph of a wood grain that is then laminated atop a wooden composite base. It is not real wood; however it does have many advantages over the other floor types. Laminate floor is durable, not sensitive to moisture and the easiest to install. The photo grain is also so good that you would not easily know it is not real wood.

Whichever flooring you choose, it is important to familiarise yourself with the methods used to fit them.

Fitting Methods:

Floating.

Floating is where the flooring is not fastened to the sub floor. This method is usually only ever used where a solid sub floor (such as concrete) is already in place. It is recommended to only use adhesive floor fitting foam to fit floating floors. It is never recommended to glue together floorboards and float them.

Mechanical fitting.

This is a popular method for fitting hardwood flooring. It involves using hand tools such as tape measure, carpenter’s square and hammer to nail or screw the floor onto existing floorboards, sub floor, joints or battens. There are different ways of completing the task with this method, including secret nailing where a nail gun is used to drive nails through the side of the tongue at angles of between 33 degrees and 45 degrees.

Gluing.

This method is suitable for fitting flooring on a solid sub floor. Always ensure that the sub floor is completely dry and free of dirt and solid particles. Install a continuous Damp Proof Membrane when using this method to ensure the floor remains dry.

Installation tips.

The key to successful installation is proper planning, preparation and execution. Ensure the relative humidity in the room where the floor is to be installed or even stored is between 50% and 65%. Too much humidity can damage the flooring and give poor results.

Also, check that the floor you get is kiln dried to the appropriate moisture content level: ideally 10%. The floor should also have been stored in temperature controlled conditions prior to your collection. This ensures the floor will require little if any acclimatisation before lying.

Finally, if you are installing the floor yourself, follow the manufacturer’s instructions fully to attain the desired results.

Flaws in Your Home Security System That Could Hurt You

If you have a home alarm or security system installed in your home, you're likely pretty well-protected from criminals and theft. However, that doesn't mean you should let your guard down completely. Home security systems are an excellent way to protect your home, but your system could have some flaws that make your property vulnerable.

You may have installed security bars on your windows and deadbolts on your doors, but are the doors and windows themselves secure? Weak door frames that can be easily forced open, rendering that deadbolt useless. A criminal could break in without much effort. Your home security system may signal an alarm, but it could be too late.

Did you change the locks when you moved into your home? If not, you have no idea how many people have keys to your property. Always change all locks to prevent unauthorized access.

Even if you already have a home alarm system or security system installed, you may not be covering all of the weak points in your property. Many people only secure the ground floor doors and windows. In this situation, other areas are left unprotected. Basement windows, garage doors and windows and easily accessible second floor windows are often targets of criminals. It's also important to ensure that all entrance ways are visible. Trimming back bushes and installing motion-activated security lights helps this problem.

It's also important to take all precautions with your actions. An alarm system or a home security system is an excellent way to protect your home, but it doesn't mean you should ignore basic safety tips.

Be careful when giving out your home alarm code. There are occasions where service workers such as cleaning services, contractors and child care workers will need to enter your home and disable the home security system. Before giving your alarm code to anyone, ensure to check some references. You never know when a service worker could come back after hours, turn off your home security system and rob your home. Working with someone that has been recommended by a friend or family member definitely decreases the likelihood of this happening.

It's also important to place your valuables where they will be difficult to find and steal. Some thieves look to break into a home, set off the alarm system and steal as much as possible before the authorities arrive. Placing valuable items in plain site and near entrances makes this even easier. You should always consider placing valuables outside of obvious places. Jewellery placed inside a jewellery box will be much more likely to be stolen than jewellery stored deep inside a drawer. It's also important that you do not place electronics like televisions right in front of your windows. Doing so makes it quite easy for a thief to see the TV and provides them with a perfect entrance point and escape route.

Of course, the most important action you can take is to use the home security options that are available to you. You should always lock your door and set you home alarm system when you leave your home. Even if you're just running to the store and think you'll be back in a couple of minutes, turning your home alarm system on is vital. Criminals could see you leave your home and attempt to strike quickly before you return. Even the best home security system in the world is rendered useless if it is not activated.

Georgia’s 2012 Southern Living Idea House

Southern Living magazine has chosen Senoia, Georgia as the site of its 2012 Idea House. This is the second time the small Georgia town, located 32 miles south of Atlanta, has been the Idea House location. Senoia was the site of the 2010 Southern Living Idea House. The 2012 home is within the town’s historic district.

Southern Living’s newest Idea House is unusual in that it is not a new construction, but a restoration of an 1830s farmhouse. This is the first time the magazine has renovated an historic home as its Idea House. The home is one of the oldest in Senoia, and has seen a number of additions and renovations over the years. Southern Living worked with architects from Historical Concepts, an Atlanta based firm, to rescue the house and redesign it for modern living. The architects were careful to stay true to the home’s original details. The structure was moved forward on the lot, gutted, and completely reconfigured inside. Old windows were replaced with new energy efficient windows. The house was clad in low maintenance exterior siding by James Hardie. A new dining room, keeping room, and a two story garage addition provide additional square footage. A wraparound front porch welcomes visitors and adds inviting outdoor space.

The interior spaces were designed by Tracery Interiors, with studios in Mountain Brook, Alabama and Rosemary Beach, Florida. The new floor plan of the farmhouse is a more open layout and lets in lots of natural light. Original materials were salvaged and reused when possible. The interiors are light, comfortable, and functional for today’s families. Fabrics and other fixtures are durable. Many of the decorating ideas can be used with any style of home. The designers have mixed old and new elements to maintain the home’s historic charm. A thoughtful landscape design adds curb appeal, and backyard living spaces provide private entertainment areas for a modern family to enjoy.

How To Lower The Cost Of House Insurance Using Home Security Cameras

We'd all like to save money on our household bills particularly when it comes to insurance. Each year the costs rise and often the increases exceed the rate at which our incomes increase leaving us with less disposable income in our bank accounts. You can save money on home insurance policies by installing security cameras inside and outside your home.

It's widely known that insurance companies will give a discount on homes that have alarm systems installed and perhaps you've already had such a system fitted to your property, but there is another way of securing a discount. This method can be used as well as an intruder alarm system or instead of, depending on your budget and the practicality of an alarm system within your property.

Home security cameras have come a long way since the first examples appeared many years ago. The modern wireless IP cameras available today have a host of features which make them not only efficient as security devices for home owners but also invaluable as monitoring devices for occasions when the householder away for short or extended periods.

Even just the visible presence of an outdoor camera can act as a deterrent to prowlers and any would-be intruders. These devices are easily purchased and installed by home owners and the criminal world is aware that the cameras can take high quality photos and video even at night. This type of evidence has helped the law enforcement agencies identify suspects and it has lead to the conviction of criminals who will no doubt think twice about repeating their crimes the next time they see such a device installed outside a property.

Many people have been put off the idea of using home surveillance systems because they imagine it involves the expense and disruption caused by installing vast amounts of new cabling and other equipment. Perhaps they cling to the misconception that the only option is an expensive CCTV system that is more appropriate for large commercial premises or the homes of the wealthiest people.

However, home owners can demonstrate their commitment to home security to their insurance companies by installing just one or more wireless IP cameras. By using either the wireless signal or, if the location of the camera means the signal is too weak to reach their household broadband router, using Power over Ethernet plugs they can connect the camera to their local network and the internet without any additional cabling. By so doing the camera becomes a real-time monitoring device as well as a motion detector which can send the owner an email alert if any movement is detected within the camera's view.

For example, the homeowner could install just one camera overlooking the yard or perhaps the driveway of the house. In this way the camera can keep watch over visitors to the house or anyone entering the yard from the rear. If any visitor has mischief in mind then the camera will capture a clear image of the suspect.

Home security cameras can also solve disputes when there has been an accident. If a vehicle visiting your house or just turning around in your driveway damages your property or your vehicles how will you know who caused the damage if you were not their to witness the event? You outdoor wireless IP camera will record the incident and send you an email with the evidence.

Review the security of your home and see how it could be improve with these devices. Install some outdoor and indoor cameras and then shop around for the best quote for your home insurance. There is a strong possibility that the cameras will pay for themselves by virtue of the discounts acquired and the peace of mind you obtain.

Actions to Take If You Are Burglarized

Imagine that you come home from a nice dinner with your family. You are all in a great mood, having enjoyed a fantastic meal with excellent company. You don't think that anything could shake your happy disposition. And then you see your front door. It has been kicked in and glass is shattered all across your front porch. Your pleasant feelings are replaced with fear, anger and confusion. You have been burglarized. What happens now?

The first action you should take is to call the police, but do not enter your house. Stay outside just in case the burglar is still inside. You do not want to put your family or yourself into further danger by crossing the path of the burglar. He will probably do whatever he has to do to make sure he gets away. If he's armed, and he probably will be, you could get hurt or even killed in the process. Call the police from your car or from a neighbor's house.

Until the police turn the house back over to you, do not go through your things. You want to leave the crime scene as intact as possible, which will help the police catch the perpetrator. Once you are given the okay to return to your house, make a list of all the items that were stolen or damaged. You will need this for insurance purposes as well as for evidence for the police. Hopefully, you had taken inventory of all your belongings before the burglary as part of your overall home security system plan, but if you didn't, be sure to include monetary values to all items placed on your list. If you have pictures of these items, include them with your list.

Think about the past few weeks and consider any suspicious behavior you might have encountered that could have contributed to your house having been chosen by the burglar. Give all information you have to the police to assist in their investigation. Even if you think it doesn't have any significance, still report your thoughts to the authorities just in case. You never know, it could be the piece of information that breaks the case.

Install a home security system if you don't already have one. This is the one action you can take to restore your peace of mind and ensure that if the burglar tries to come back that you don't become a victim again.

Tips And Guide To Facts About Advantages Of Using Soft Furnishings To Decorate Your Home

When decorating your home or room, consider applying simple decor and colors to the main pieces such as the couch, chair, tables and wall paint. By keeping these major factors on the mainstream, you can play around with colors, textures and accessories to your heart's delight. Use your accent colors on soft furnishings such as your curtains, rugs, and throw pillows.

You will save on decorating costs by maintaining a neutral look to your main pieces and interiors. Use smaller and cheaper items like throw pillows, curtains and throw rugs to add personality to your home. You may replace or change these small accent pieces every few months if you want to make your room look different. This will be less expensive than repainting your walls of having your couch reupholstered.

Getting your couch reupholstered or your home repainted will come out to be too expensive just to achieve having a new look. You can spruce up your interior design by replacing throw pillow covers, curtains and other small decor pieces. Retain a neutral tone to larger parts of the room and just change smaller pieces that do not cost as much as repainting walls and upholstery work.

You should spice up a plain beige sofa with colourful throw pillows and a blanket. Use the same color on your window dressing to complement your other accent pieces. This will make your whole room blend magnificently. When using this concept to decorate a room, stick to 2 or 3 colors only. Applying more than 3 shades to your theme may create a disorganized and mismatched look.

It is going to be less difficult to replace small cheap items as compared to repainting entire walls or having your living room set reupholstered. If you want to be more creative, get more pillow covers, area rugs, curtains and throw blankets in various colors, patterns and designs. It is that easy to change the entire look of your living room without spending too much for a total renovation.

This can instantly change the way your room looks and even brighten up your mood. Even your guests will notice a pleasant change each time they visit your house. The room will appear like it had just received a make-over when in fact, you had just replaced the rug, curtain or covers of some pillows.
